How does online therapy work?

Telehealth therapy allows you to meet with me online through a secure video platform from the comfort of your home or another private location. You can join sessions from anywhere within California.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. What you share with me in therapy sessions is protected by privacy laws and ethical guidelines, meaning I cannot disclose what you discuss without your written permission. However, there are some specific exceptions wherein I am required by law to divulge private information. As a therapist, I am mandated to report:

  • Suspected child-abuse, dependent adult abuse, or elder abuse. In this instance I am required to notify Child or Adult Protective Services.

  • If a client threatens and intends to cause serious bodily harm to another person and/or property. In this instance I am required to notify the police.

  • If a client intends to threaten their life. I make every effort to work with clients to ensure both their safety and their privacy. However, if an individual is unable or unwilling to keep themselves safe, additional measures may be taken to save a client’s life.

I will review these exceptions with you in your first session to ensure you understand your rights and the limits of confidentiality.

What if I am having suicidal thoughts?

I have worked with plenty of clients who regularly have suicidal thoughts and we are able to effectively manage their safety. It would only be necessary for me to call 911 or the crisis team if you left session stating you intended to end your life and did not want my help to avert that action.

How long does therapy take?

The length of time that you are in therapy is your choice and largely depends on the complexity of what brought you into therapy and what you hope to accomplish. Clients that are focused on symptom relief can begin to feel better in a short time, and feel their experience in therapy is complete. Others want to continue therapy beyond symptom relief to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying causes and conditions of symptoms. Some clients choose to stay in therapy for a year or more because they find therapy invaluable to their continue self-exploration and self-discovery.
