Finding the Right Therapist for You.

You may be surprised to know this, but your experience in therapy can vary greatly from one therapist to another. This is not necessarily because some therapists are better than others, though of course as with any profession this is true of psychotherapy as well, but mainly because each therapist is unique. Even if two therapists practice the same modality, who they are and how they practice therapy is one-of-a-kind.

I recommend reading through therapists’ profiles to see if you like what they have to say. If you do, reach out and ask if they are available for a brief phone call. On the call share a little bit about what’s causing you to look for a therapist and what you hope to work on in therapy. Ask the therapist to share about how they work with clients and what their approach to therapy is. After a few minutes on the phone, if you feel relatively comfortable talking with them, go ahead and schedule an initial appointment.

An initial appointment is just that. You can’t know if you’ve found the right therapist for you until you’ve met with them. It’s similar to meeting someone for the first time and knowing that you click, could get along ok, or that the vibes are off.

I definitely want you to know this - if you meet with a therapist once, twice, or even a number of times and it doesn’t work out, that’s ok! Please don’t let that discourage you from therapy altogether. Like I said, it may seem surprising, but your experience in therapy can be a varied as the number of therapists there are.
